The Book That Changed Everything

The Book That Changed Everything

I was 30 years old, sitting in my apartment after a three-job workday, with $20 in my pocket from a trip to Hawaii. Then I opened a book that rewired how I think about money — and everything after that was different.

I didn't grow up reading. I grew up surviving.

In 2008 I came to America from Vietnam at 20 years old. No money, limited English, no network. I worked three jobs and went to school for Computer Science at the same time. For almost a decade, I lived paycheck to paycheck — not because I was careless, but because nobody had ever shown me a different way to think about money.

By the time I was 30, I'd taken a trip to Hawaii. I came back with $20 to my name. Not $20 in savings — $20, period. I remember sitting in my apartment that night, exhausted from a three-job workday, doing the math on my life and not liking the answer.

That's when I picked up The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham.

I wasn't looking for a stock-picking guide. I didn't even know what a P/E ratio was. What hit me wasn't the mechanics of investing — it was one idea: the margin of safety. Graham's whole philosophy is that you protect yourself from being wrong, because you will be wrong sometimes, and the people who survive being wrong are the ones who never bet everything on being right.

That idea didn't stay in the stock market. It rewired how I looked at every decision in my life — how much debt I was willing to carry, how much of my income I was willing to spend, how much risk I was willing to take with money I couldn't afford to lose.

I didn't get rich the week after I finished that book. I didn't get rich the year after. What changed was simpler and more durable than that: I stopped making decisions based on how I felt that month, and started making them based on a system that didn't depend on my mood, my willpower, or my luck.

Eight years later I had built a net worth north of $780,000, paid off a house in under three years, and enlisted in the U.S. Army — not because I needed to, but because I finally had the stability to choose to serve.

None of that started with a stock tip. It started with $20 in my pocket and one book that told me the truth: you don't need to be brilliant to build wealth. You need a system, and the discipline to never bet the farm.

If you're at the point I was at — three jobs, no margin, no plan — start there. Not with a budget app. Not with a side hustle. With one book that teaches you how to think about risk before you ever put a dollar at risk. I've put together the full list of books that shaped my journey — start with this one.
