From Broke
To $750K

A Vietnamese immigrant, three jobs, and one decision that changed everything.

This is the story of how discipline — not income — builds wealth. I'm sharing every number, every mistake, and every decision so you can skip the decade I lost and start building now.

A New Country, Zero Dollars

I arrived in the United States from Vietnam at 20 with almost nothing to my name — no English fluency, no network, no savings. To survive, I worked three jobs simultaneously, doing whatever it took. For nearly a decade, every paycheck disappeared before the next one arrived. I was living proof that income alone does not build wealth.

The Hawaii Wake-Up Call

My family took a trip to Hawaii, and I realized I had just $20 in my pocket. My family covered everything — airfare, hotel, and food. I was 30 years old, working constantly, and had nothing to show for it. That moment of humiliation was the best thing that ever happened to me. On the flight home, I promised myself it would never happen again.

Two Books That Rewired My Brain

I read The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham and Naked Statistics by Charles Wheelan back to back. Graham's core lesson — that the market rewards patience and punishes emotion — completely changed how I thought about money. I stopped seeing my paycheck as something to spend and started seeing it as ammunition to invest. Naked Statistics did something equally powerful: it taught me how to see the world through data rather than feelings. From that point on, I made every financial decision based on numbers and evidence, not fear or excitement. Emotion is the enemy of good investing. Data is the antidote.

The System That Changed Everything

I stopped trying to be clever with money and built a simple, four-part system instead. First, I saved aggressively — roughly 60% of my income. I lived well below my means and refused to let my lifestyle grow with my income. Every raise, every bonus, every extra dollar went into the system, not into a bigger apartment or a newer car. Second, I funneled every available dollar into tax-advantaged accounts: my employer-sponsored retirement account, a Roth IRA, a Health Savings Account, a 529 college savings account for my daughter, and the new Trump account. The government gives you legal ways to shelter your money from taxes — I used every single one of them. Third, I invested in S&P 500 index funds and never sold. No stock picks. No trying to time the market. No chasing hot tips. Just broad market index funds, bought consistently every single month — through dips, crashes, and everything in between. Boring on purpose. Relentless by design. Fourth, I bought a house and paid it off quickly — in 2 years and 9 months — to take advantage of the $250,000 tax-free capital gain exclusion. As long as you live in the home for at least 2 years and meet the IRS requirements, you can sell and keep up to $250,000 in profit completely tax-free. By paying it off fast, I paid only $13,500 in total interest. That's it. Four steps. Anyone can follow this. The hard part is not understanding it — it is having the discipline to stick with it when the market drops 20% and everyone around you is panicking.

First $100K — The Hardest Milestone

Hitting $100,000 net worth took years and felt impossibly slow. But there is a mathematical reality most people do not feel until they see it: the first $100K is the hardest because you are building the machine, not running it. After $100K, compounding starts doing the heavy lifting. I knew then that the system was working.

$750,000 Net Worth

At 38, my net worth crossed $750,000. Not from luck. Not from a high salary. From a simple system applied with discipline over eight years. The same system I started with $0 and a $20-in-my-pocket moment in Hawaii.

Enlisted in the US Army

In January 2026, I enlisted in the US Army. I had already reached financial freedom — I joined because I wanted to serve and because I saw an opportunity to help soldiers who were in the same position I was in a decade ago. Since Basic Combat Training, I have shared my financial system with more than 25 soldiers. Five have fully committed to the plan and are executing it. I built this site to reach the thousands more who need it.

“You don't need to earn more. You need a system. Let me show you mine.”
